Introduction<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>elbow dysplasia<\/span><\/b> is a common disease affecting dogs, particularly large breeds. The condition usually develops in young, growing dogs and progresses throughout their lives, causing pain, lameness and degenerative changes in the elbow joint. The origins of elbow dysplasia lie in <\/span>multifactorial<\/span><\/b>but the main factor remains genetic <\/span>genetic<\/span><\/b>. This article explains the main types of elbow dysplasia, diagnostic methods and treatment options available to general veterinarians. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Elbow dysplasia can take many forms, affecting the joint at different levels. Here are the most common conditions: <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Non-union of the anconeal process<\/span><\/b> The anconeal process does not fuse properly with the rest of the ulna during growth.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Fragmentation of the medial coronoid process (FPCM)<\/span><\/b> A small portion of the coronoid process fractures, causing inflammation and pain.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Joint incongruence<\/span><\/b> The ulna and radius are not the same length, resulting in joint instability.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                              Symptoms can appear as early as 5 months of age, but some symptoms only become visible later, between the ages of 2 and 5.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                              Diagnosis of Elbow Dysplasia<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n

                              Visit <\/span>diagnosis<\/span><\/b> is based on several tests, including :<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                              • Clinical examination<\/span><\/b> Clinical examination: Identification of lameness and elbow pain.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                • X-rays<\/span><\/b> Used to visualize bone anomalies such as non-union of the anconeal process.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                    Arthroscopy is generally recommended to remove the bone fragment and improve joint comfort.                                     In dogs under 10 months of age, surgical <\/span>surgical fixation<\/span><\/b> of the anconeal process, combined with <\/span>ulnar osteotomy<\/span><\/b> to correct incongruence, is recommended. In cases of advanced dysplasia with severe osteoarthrosis, the ununited anconeal process is removed to relieve pain. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                                    Joint incongruence<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

                                    A <\/span>ulnar osteotomy<\/span><\/b> corrects radio-ulnar incongruence by adjusting the length of the ulna in relation to the radius.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                                    Post-operative management and prognosis<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h2>\n

                                    After surgery, a period of <\/span>rest<\/span><\/b> is necessary, usually with leash walks and wound care. The <\/span>physiotherapy<\/span><\/b> plays a key role in improving mobility, strengthening muscles and limiting joint ankylosis.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                                    The prognosis varies according to the dog’s age and the severity of the lesions. Dogs treated early generally have a better prognosis, with a marked reduction in lameness and improved joint comfort. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
