Radioactive Iodine Treatment for Feline Hyperthyroidism – A targeted, effective solution

Introduction

Hyperthyroidism is a common condition in older cats, which can lead to cardiac, renal and hypertensive complications. Treatment with iodine-131 is recognized as the safest and most effective approach to treating this condition. Unlike chronic drug therapy or surgery, this solution directly targets abnormal thyroid cells without affecting healthy tissue.

At CENTREDMVET, we are one of the few centers in Quebec to offer this advanced treatment, which complies with the strict standards of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Our specialized equipment includes :

Precise administration of radioactive iodine: Targeted treatment without surgery or anesthesia
Specialized hospital monitoring: Secure stay with daily patient status updates
Non-invasive approach: A single injection is sufficient in the majority of cases

Course of treatment and hospitalization

Treatment with iodine-131 requires hospitalization for 7 to 10 days, in accordance with strict CNSC standards. This period of isolation is essential to ensure the safe dissipation of radioactivity before returning home. Although visits are not permitted, owners receive regular updates on their pets. Once discharged, your cat can return to its usual environment with minimal follow-up required.

Interdisciplinary collaboration and personalized follow-up

Our specialists in endocrinology, internal medicine and medical imaging work together to ensure accurate diagnosis and rigorous follow-up before, during and after treatment. This multidisciplinary approach guarantees comprehensive care, aiming for optimal recovery and lasting improvement in the quality of life of hyperthyroid cats.

In most cases, normalization of thyroid function is observed without the need for further treatment. Whether for preliminary evaluation, treatment or post-treatment follow-up, our 131 iodine service is available to offer an effective, long-lasting solution, always respecting animal welfare.
